ITA Airways Resumes Rome-Tripoli Flights After 10 Years
ITA Airways, Italy’s national flag carrier, has made history by becoming the first Western European airline to resume direct flights to Tripoli, Libya, after a decade-long suspension. On January 12, 2025, the airline launched a direct connection between Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) and Tripoli Mitiga International Airport (MJI). This milestone marks a significant step in rebuilding ties between the two nations.
The new service offers two weekly flights, catering to both business and leisure travelers. Andrea Benassi, General Manager of ITA Airways, expressed pride in the airline’s role in strengthening commercial and cultural connections between Libya and Italy. “This route underscores our commitment to fostering bilateral relations and supporting economic growth,” Benassi stated.
The launch ceremony at Rome Fiumicino Airport was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Mayor of Fiumicino and representatives from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority. According to the Libyan News Agency (LANA), the event highlighted the importance of rekindling ties between the countries, with the route symbolizing a new chapter in their partnership.
The decision to restore flights comes on the heels of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Tripoli in October 2024. During her trip, both nations signed agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in development, investment, and infrastructure projects. This development occurs despite ongoing security concerns in Libya. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) continues to advise against flying in Libyan airspace at all altitudes due to potential risks associated with terrorist activity and military operations. The advisory remains in place until at least April 30, 2025. ITA Airways has taken extensive precautions to ensure passenger safety, adhering to strict international security protocols.
Before this resumption, most international airlines had ceased operations to Libya following the outbreak of civil war in 2014, which resulted in a fractured administration and heightened instability. The restoration of direct air links is seen as a bold move that could pave the way for further normalization of international travel to Libya.
