ITA Airways Revives Alitalia Brand Amid Growth Surge
ITA Airways, the Italian flag carrier, has released its financial results for the first half of 2024, showing a marked improvement compared to the previous year. During a press event at the company’s new Milan offices on September 27, 2024, airline executives announced plans to partially reintroduce the iconic Alitalia brand, despite its tarnished history.
For the six months ending June 30, 2024, ITA Airways reported revenues of €1.4 billion ($1.54 billion), an increase of €300 million ($333 million) from the same period in 2023. The airline achieved an EBITDA of €62 million ($68.2 million), reflecting a significant improvement of €130 million ($144.3 million) year-over-year. Cash reserves also rose to €393 million ($436.23 million), up €31 million from June 2023.
The airline’s operational performance paralleled its financial success, with an average load factor of 79%, a 2% increase over the first half of 2023. ITA Airways transported over 8.3 million passengers, marking a 26% improvement from the previous year. Additionally, the airline recorded a completion rate of 99.84% and a punctuality rate of 78.1%.
In an unexpected announcement, ITA Airways revealed plans to renovate its lounge at Milan Linate Airport (LIN), increasing capacity to 400 passengers per day. The airline also intends to introduce branding inspired by Alitalia at select customer touchpoints by the end of 2024, stating that the Alitalia brand remains an important asset.
Antonino Turicchi, Chairman of ITA Airways, expressed confidence in the brand’s future, stating, “The figures confirm the growth process already underway since last year.” While the return of the Alitalia name is welcomed by many, its previous reputation raises questions about its revitalization. Nonetheless, the reintroduction may enhance ITA Airways’ international recognition and presence in the global airline industry.
