Italy’s Rimini Airport’s Route Expansion

Rimini and San Marino International Airport “Federico Fellini” (RMI), located in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is undergoing a major transformation aimed at strengthening its role as a tourism and business gateway. Operated by the AIRiminum Group, the airport is in the midst of a multimillion-euro modernization masterplan to enhance infrastructure, passenger experience, and airline accessibility.

RMI is projected to handle 450,000 passengers in 2025—a 50% increase over 2024—driven by the arrival of new airline partners and expanded route offerings. Speaking at Routes Europe 2025, RMI CEO Leonardo Corbucci highlighted the airport’s strong momentum, with easyJet, British Airways, and Vueling all launching new services this year.

easyJet began flying to London Gatwick and Basel-Mulhouse in April, while British Airways launched a 3X-weekly service to London Heathrow in May, improving access for long-haul travelers. In July, Vueling added a new route to Barcelona El Prat. Ryanair, a long-standing partner, has also increased capacity by 20% for the summer season.

While Rimini is primarily a leisure destination, the region’s automotive and industrial strength—including brands like Ferrari and Maserati—also draws business travel. The airport’s strategy aims to support both segments through improved connectivity.

The first phase of RMI’s infrastructure upgrade will be completed by 2027, including runway expansion and terminal upgrades. Corbucci envisions Rimini becoming “the most modern and most beautiful regional airport in Italy.”

Looking ahead, Rimini will host Routes Europe 2026 from May 18–20, positioning the airport and region at the center of Europe’s network development conversation.
