Japan Airlines (JAL) has launched an extraordinary new livery on its Boeing 737-800 to mark the upcoming EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The aircraft, now affectionately known as the “JAL GUNDAM JET,” features a striking design inspired by the legendary giant robot RX-78F00/E Gundam, merging aviation with one of Japan’s most iconic cultural exports.

The impressive livery was unveiled on March 3, 2025, at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) in a ceremony that underscored the growing bond between modern aviation and Japan’s celebrated pop culture. The aircraft, registered as JA342J, embarked on its inaugural flight to Tokushima Airport (TKS) immediately following the reveal. With this new design, JAL not only celebrates a technological marvel of the skies but also pays homage to a franchise that has captivated audiences worldwide since the 1970s.

The RX-78F00/E Gundam, showcased on the side of the aircraft, is more than just a visual treat—it represents a symbol of innovation and creativity that has fueled a multi-billion dollar industry in toys, merchandise, and entertainment. The Gundam-inspired design is an integral part of a broader campaign that includes a new video, set to debut at Bandai Namco’s ‘GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION’ during EXPO 2025. This digital showcase is designed to connect fans of the franchise and inspire children by sparking their imagination about the future of technology and robotics.

A JAL spokesperson explained that the collaboration with the Gundam franchise is intended to “share the vision of the ‘GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION’ and encourage everyone to think about the ‘Future’ together.” The message, aimed especially at young audiences, highlights the role of innovation and creativity in shaping tomorrow’s world. By allowing the “JAL GUNDAM JET” to take to the skies, the airline hopes to foster a sense of wonder and excitement about the potential of both aviation and futuristic technology.

In addition to the iconic Gundam image, the new livery incorporates the official EXPO 2025 character, ‘MYAKU-MYAKU’—a mysterious red and blue creature symbolizing the fusion of cells and water. This creative touch further enhances the aircraft’s appeal and aligns it with the overarching themes of EXPO 2025, which is set to celebrate technological progress and cultural exchange on a global stage.

The unveiling of the JAL GUNDAM JET is the result of a high-profile collaboration between Japan Airlines and leading industry figures. The launch was officially marked by a joint appearance from Japan Airlines President and CEO, Mitsuko Tottori, and Bandai Namco President, Masaru Kawaguchi. Their partnership reflects a shared commitment to showcasing Japan’s creative prowess and technological expertise to an international audience.

JAL plans to operate the newly painted Boeing 737-800 on domestic routes until November 2025, shortly after the closing of EXPO 2025 in October. Alongside the unique aircraft design, the airline will also roll out limited-edition merchandise and offer commemorative tours across Japan. Under the banner “Discover the sights and sounds of your favorite anime, throughout Japan,” these initiatives are designed to provide fans and travelers with immersive experiences that celebrate both aviation and anime culture.

With the JAL GUNDAM JET, Japan Airlines is not only setting a new benchmark in airline branding but also inviting passengers on a journey that transcends traditional travel, merging the realms of art, technology, and cultural storytelling.
