JetBlue Crew Extinguishes Cellphone Fire on Flight from Los Angeles to Boston

A JetBlue flight from Los Angeles to Boston encountered a frightening moment when smoke began filling the cabin due to a cellphone fire. The incident occurred on flight 988 as it was nearing Logan Airport.

According to JetBlue, the smoke originated from a malfunctioning mobile phone belonging to a passenger. Laura Benson, a passenger from Brockton, Massachusetts, described witnessing thick smoke emanating from the seat area near first class. “You smelled the plastic first, like a really harsh smell, and then the cabin just filled up with smoke,” Benson told WBZ-TV. She observed the crew springing into action immediately to handle the situation.

JetBlue’s crew managed the emergency with precision and professionalism. “Crewmembers addressed the situation consistent with their training. The flight landed safely, and no injuries or aircraft damage were reported,” stated JetBlue in a response to the incident.

Benson recounted how the crew swiftly relocated two passengers from the affected area and used a fire extinguisher to ensure everyone’s safety. The crew also moved the malfunctioning phone to the bathroom and secured it there to contain any further risk. In an effort to clear the air and alleviate discomfort caused by the smoke, the crew announced they were turning on the air systems.

The passengers on board expressed their gratitude towards the crew for their effective management of the situation. “There was a clap at the end and we just said thank you,” Benson remarked, highlighting the relief and appreciation felt by everyone aboard.

JetBlue has announced that it will collaborate with relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. This event follows a similar occurrence in 2019, when a Virgin Atlantic flight had to make an emergency landing at Logan Airport due to a cell phone battery pack catching fire.
