JetBlue’s SAF Leap at JFK Fuels Sustainability
JetBlue Airways is set to make a significant stride toward decarbonizing the aviation industry as it begins using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for flights operating from its New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) base. This move marks the first time that SAF will be regularly incorporated into operations at JFK, positioning the airport as a leading example in sustainable fuel usage among major international gateways.
In a groundbreaking arrangement, World Fuel Services will deliver at least one million gallons of SAF to JFK for JetBlue’s use over the next 12 months, with the potential to extend the contract. JetBlue also has an option to purchase an additional four million gallons of SAF from World Fuel Services, providing an avenue for further expansion of sustainable fuel consumption at the airport. This initiative is part of JetBlue’s broader strategy to integrate renewable fuels into its operations, underscoring its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of air travel.
The sustainable aviation fuel is produced by Diamond Green Diesel, a joint venture between Valero and Darling Ingredients. Valero will blend the SAF with conventional jet fuel, ensuring that the final product meets the rigorous standards required for commercial aviation. Once blended, World Fuel Services will distribute the fuel through the existing jet fuel distribution network at JFK, where JetBlue will then claim it for use in its fleet. This seamless integration into the current fuel infrastructure not only demonstrates the viability of SAF but also paves the way for other airlines to adopt similar practices.
JetBlue’s Chief Financial Officer, Ursula Hurley, described the initiative as a “big step” for the carrier, emphasizing that incorporating SAF into flights is an important lever in the aviation industry’s efforts to decarbonize. The regular use of sustainable aviation fuel at JFK represents a major advancement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, a key objective as the industry faces increasing pressure to mitigate climate change.
