Jetstar Expands Trans-Tasman with New Direct Flights to NZ
Jetstar is set to enhance its Trans-Tasman network by launching direct flights from Gold Coast Airport (OOL) to two major destinations in New Zealand. Starting June 2025, the Melbourne-based low-cost carrier will introduce direct services between the Gold Coast and Dunedin Airport (DUD) as well as Hamilton Airport (HLZ), marking a significant expansion in its regional offerings.
The new thrice-weekly flights to both Dunedin and Hamilton are projected to add over 115,000 seats annually to the Trans-Tasman route. This expansion is expected to provide a substantial boost to Gold Coast tourism by offering more affordable and convenient travel options for both leisure and business travelers. By increasing the number of available seats, Jetstar aims to cater to the growing demand and enhance connectivity between Australia and New Zealand.
To support these new routes, Jetstar will base an additional aircraft at Gold Coast Airport starting June 2025. This strategic move will expand Jetstar’s local fleet at OOL Airport to six aircraft, ensuring reliable and frequent service to the newly introduced destinations. The increased fleet capacity will help maintain high service standards and meet the anticipated passenger demand during the peak travel season.
“Tourism is a key industry on the Gold Coast, and the new agreement with Queensland Airports will support the growth of inbound tourism and provide a big boost to local operators,” stated Stephanie Tully, Jetstar Group CEO. “It’s also great news for customers, with the new routes unlocking more than 115,000 new low fares seats a year between the Gold Coast and Hamilton and Dunedin, while helping to connect the city’s large population of Kiwi expats to their home country,” she added.
In addition to the new Gold Coast routes, Jetstar has announced the launch of another Trans-Tasman route from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) to Hamilton. This route will also commence in June 2025, further expanding Jetstar’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The Sydney to Hamilton flights will provide additional travel options for passengers, enhancing Jetstar’s network and increasing its competitive edge in the low-cost carrier market.
The three new Trans-Tasman routes will operate on the following schedules:
Dunedin – Gold Coast:
- Flights: JQ164, JQ163
- Frequency: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
- Depart from HLZ: 1230
- Arrive at OOL: 1420
- Depart from OOL: 0620
- Arrive at HLZ: 1130
Hamilton – Sydney:
- Flights: JQ166, JQ165
- Frequency: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
- Depart from HLZ: 1205
- Arrive at SYD: 1335
- Depart from SYD: 0615
- Arrive at HLZ: 1115
