Kalitta Air Set to Launch First 777-300ER Converted Freighter

Kalitta Air is preparing to become the first airline to operate a Boeing 777-300ER converted freighter in commercial service, marking a milestone for the aftermarket cargo market. The Michigan-based all-cargo carrier plans to begin flying the aircraft in October, with two units already delivered to its Oscoda maintenance facility for final preparations.

The aircraft, dubbed the “Big Twin,” were converted from passenger to freighter configuration by Israel Aerospace Industries under a program launched more than five years ago with leasing partner AerCap. IAI recently secured certification for the structural changes from the FAA and Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority.

Conversion work includes stripping the cabin interior, reinforcing floor beams, installing a wide cargo door, a protective cockpit barrier, and a cargo handling system. The 777-300ER Special Freighter offers 110 tons of payload, 14% more volume than a 747-400 converted freighter, and is 21% more fuel efficient. Its size makes it ideal for e-commerce shipments that are large in volume but light in weight.

Kalitta Air currently operates 21 Boeing 747-400 cargo jets and 10 factory-built 777 freighters. Founder and CEO Connie Kalitta said the new aircraft will provide greater range and payload capability while replacing aging 747s.

IAI and AerCap have dozens of additional 777 conversions in progress for carriers including Emirates SkyCargo, Challenge Airlines, EVA Air, and Fly Meta. Analysts say such programs will help fill a looming gap in large freighters as older widebodies retire and production of next-generation factory-built freighters remains delayed.
