Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania Sign MoU on Cargo and MRO Partnership

Kenya Airways and Air Tanzania have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in cargo services, maintenance, and regional connectivity. The agreement, signed on July 28 in Dar es Salaam, aims to strengthen air transport ties across East and Southern Africa.

The MoU focuses on collaboration in key areas including engineering, aircraft maintenance, cargo operations, safety, innovation, and workforce training. According to a joint statement, the partnership reflects both airlines’ commitment to offering unified travel options and boosting operational efficiencies in the region.

Kenya Airways Group CEO Allan Kilavuka said the partnership highlights the airline’s commitment to building regional capacity to support economic growth, trade, and tourism across East Africa. Air Tanzania CEO Peter Ulanga called the agreement a “significant milestone” in expanding the carrier’s footprint across the continent.

This partnership follows reports in June that Kenya Airways had been pursuing Air Tanzania as a potential cargo partner. Kenya Airways is also in talks with South African Airways Cargo and is exploring technical collaboration with SAA Technical (SAAT), the maintenance division of South African Airways.

The move aligns with Kenya Airways’ broader strategy to establish a pan-African airline alliance. Originally launched with South African Airways in 2021, the alliance aims to improve network coordination, joint scheduling, and cost reductions to compete more effectively with foreign carriers operating in Africa.

In December 2023, Kenya Airways and SAA expanded their codeshare agreement to include São Paulo, Brazil, reinforcing their growing international cooperation.
