Kenya Airways is celebrating two landmark developments that promise to boost its global network and maintenance capabilities. On January 30, 2025, the carrier announced a new codeshare agreement with Air India and confirmed that its Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO) has achieved EASA Part-145 Certification. Both milestones underscore Kenya Airways’ commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and strengthening its operational leadership in Africa.
New Codeshare Partnership with Air India
The newly expanded codeshare agreement between Kenya Airways and Air India marks a significant evolution of their existing interline partnership. Under this agreement, passengers traveling between Africa and India will enjoy a seamless travel experience with benefits including a single ticket, same-terminal connections, through-checked baggage, and shorter layovers.
Specifically, Air India will now place its “AI” designator on twice-daily Kenya Airways-operated flights between Nairobi and Mumbai. This enhanced connectivity will enable passengers arriving in Mumbai on Kenya Airways flights to easily transfer to Air India-operated flights, connecting them to key destinations such as Bangkok, Colombo, Dhaka, Malé, Melbourne, and Singapore.
Additionally, Kenya Airways will affix its “KQ” designator on Air India-operated flights between Delhi and Nairobi, thereby facilitating smooth travel for passengers from across Africa headed to Delhi via Nairobi. The airlines have expressed plans to expand the codeshare agreement further by incorporating additional destinations from their respective networks in the near future.
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, said, “Deepening our partnership with Kenya Airways aligns perfectly with Air India’s strategic vision of expanding our global footprint and strengthening our position in key markets. Our codeshare partnership will provide significant benefits to guests of both airlines and contribute to the overall growth of air travel between India and Africa.” This new partnership is expected to unlock significant opportunities for increased passenger traffic and mutually beneficial network expansion in both regions.
EASA Part-145 Certification for Kenya Airways AMO
In another strategic milestone, Kenya Airways’ Aircraft Maintenance Organization has received Part-145 Certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This certification authorizes Kenya Airways to perform heavy and light maintenance, as well as repairs and overhauls, on European-registered aircraft and those registered in other jurisdictions.
The rigorous Part-145 application process began in 2022 and involved addressing 415 compliance actions. These actions required comprehensive facility upgrades, the recruitment of skilled staff, extensive procedural updates, and significant equipment acquisitions. After a demanding nine-month process, Kenya Airways successfully aligned with EASA standards, enabling the airline to offer a full spectrum of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services.
With this accreditation, Kenya Airways is now equipped to carry out Base Maintenance on Embraer E190s and Boeing 737-700/800/900 aircraft, as well as Light Maintenance on Boeing 787-8s, Embraer E190s, and Boeing 737-700/800/900 aircraft. A spokesperson for Kenya Airways stated, “With this accreditation, we now have the capability to expand our Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services, create new revenue streams, and strengthen our position as a leader in aircraft maintenance in Africa.” This certification not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions Kenya Airways as a competitive provider of aircraft maintenance services on the continent.
These two major developments – the expanded codeshare with Air India and the EASA Part-145 Certification – represent critical steps in Kenya Airways’ ongoing strategy to modernize its fleet, expand its global network, and enhance its maintenance capabilities. By offering seamless travel connectivity and robust MRO services, Kenya Airways is set to serve passengers better while driving new revenue opportunities.
As the airline celebrates these achievements, passengers and industry stakeholders alike can look forward to a future where travel between Africa and key global markets is more convenient and reliable, and where aircraft maintenance standards reach new heights in safety and efficiency.
