Kenya Airways Proposes Accra as West Africa Hub

Kenya Airways is seeking to establish a secondary hub in Accra, Ghana, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen connectivity across West Africa and international markets. The proposal was formally presented by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, during an official visit to Accra on May 7. He was accompanied by Kenya Airways Group CEO Allan Kilavuka and delivered a message from President William Ruto to Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
The move aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to enhance intra-African trade and regional integration. The AfCFTA secretariat is based in Accra, making the city a strategic location for enhanced aviation connectivity.
Chirchir highlighted that Kenya Airways already operates flights to several West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Cameroon. Establishing a hub in Accra would not only position the city as a key aviation gateway but also boost trade, tourism, and investment across the region.
Kenya Airways currently operates daily flights between Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Accra, with twice-daily frequencies on select days, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, according to ch-aviation schedules data.
Meanwhile, Ghana has formed a task force to explore the launch of a national flag carrier, as the country currently lacks one. A partnership with Kenya Airways could support that ambition while deepening aviation and economic ties between the two nations.
