KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has signed a new agreement with the Netherlands Ministry of Defense to strengthen collaboration between civil and military aviation. A key part of the deal includes allowing KLM pilots to serve as reservists on the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s F-35 fighter jet fleet.

Announced in July 2025, the agreement permits KLM to allocate the equivalent of five full-time positions (FTEs) for pilots to participate in the F-35 reservist program. These hours may be divided among multiple pilots who voluntarily wish to contribute to national defense by training and flying with the military. Initially, the program will focus on KLM pilots in entry-level positions who can support F-35 pilot training and operations.

“The world around us has become less secure, and the challenges for the armed forces are significant,” said Netherlands State Secretary of Defense Gijs Tuinman. “Cooperation with the business sector is therefore crucial. This agreement with KLM is an important step in making the Netherlands more resilient.”

KLM CEO Marjan Rintel added, “I’m proud that KLM can contribute to the Netherlands’ security through this program. It not only supports national defense but also makes KLM an even more attractive employer by offering pilots the opportunity to serve in dual roles.”

Beyond the F-35 initiative, KLM and the Ministry of Defense are also exploring expanded cooperation in recruitment, technical training, aircraft maintenance, and air transport. The move highlights a growing civil-military partnership aimed at addressing both national security and workforce development.
