KLM Welcomes First Airbus A321neo to Fleet with Inaugural Flights

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has officially welcomed its first Airbus A321-252neoX into its fleet, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal efforts. The brand-new A321neo took off on its inaugural flight from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) on September 16, 2024, at 07:15, according to flightradar.com.

The aircraft made its first landing at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) approximately 55 minutes after takeoff. Following this successful flight, the A321neo returned to Amsterdam less than two hours later, continuing its busy schedule. Shortly afterward, it departed for Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and is currently awaiting its return from Germany, although it has experienced a delay of over an hour.

KLM’s new A321neo is set to make additional flights throughout the day, including a trip to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), with plans to return to Schiphol at 23:00. However, the schedule may be adjusted due to the earlier delays in Berlin.

“The arrival of this new aircraft is an important step in our large-scale fleet renewal, which aims to promote cleaner, quieter, and more fuel-efficient flying,” said a KLM spokesperson. The A321neo will begin servicing routes to Copenhagen, Berlin, and Stockholm immediately, with plans to expand to Paris, Prague, and Vienna later this year. KLM is also set to add three more A321neo aircraft to its fleet before the year concludes.

KLM celebrated the arrival of the Airbus A321neo with a ceremonial water salute and a personalized escort on August 27, 2024, in Amsterdam. This event highlights the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet while maintaining its rich history and tradition.

In keeping with its 104-year legacy of naming its aircraft, KLM has selected unique names for the first four A321neo aircraft. Following discussions with KLM employees, the names were inspired by the theme “Butterflies.” The inaugural aircraft will carry the names Swallowtail (Koninginnepage), Peach Blossom (Braamvlinder), Common Brimstone (Citroenvlinder), and Clouded Magpie (Porseleinvlinder).
