Korean Air to Order 40 Boeing 777-9 and 787-10 Widebody Jets
Korean Air and Boeing have solidified a historic partnership with a long-anticipated order for up to 50 brand-new widebody jets, marking a major milestone for both companies. Announced on March 26, 2025, the finalized agreement includes 20 Boeing 777-9s and 20 Boeing 787-10s, along with options for 10 additional 787 Dreamliners in the future. Valued at $24.9 billion, the deal is a testament to the enduring relationship between Korean Air and Boeing, a partnership that has spanned over 50 years and is built on mutual trust and shared growth.
The agreement was first hinted at during the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, where both parties unveiled plans to purchase a substantial number of widebody aircraft that will modernize Korean Air’s fleet. With these new jets, Korean Air aims to enhance its long-haul capabilities and better serve its global network, positioning itself for continued growth and success in the competitive aviation market. The new widebody aircraft will be powered by advanced GEnx and GE9X engines, ensuring superior fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and extended range. Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Northeast Asia, Dan Schull, noted that the record order underscores the strength of Boeing’s market-leading widebody family. He pointed out that the economic efficiency and range of the new 777X and 787 Dreamliner aircraft will provide Korean Air with a competitive advantage in the international market. In addition to the aircraft order, the deal includes an engine service agreement with GE Aerospace, which will cover the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the GE9X engines.
