Larnaka Airport Expands Routes and Enhances European Connectivity

Larnaka International Airport (LCA) in Cyprus, operated by Hermes Airports, experienced a significant surge in traffic in 2023, handling 8.1 million passengers—a 34% increase from the previous year. Recognized as the winner of the 5-10 Million Passengers category at the Routes Awards during Routes World 2023 in Istanbul, LCA has been lauded for its robust network growth and strategic airline partnerships.

The airport’s success can be attributed to innovative incentive programs for airlines and close collaboration with Cyprus’ tourism stakeholders. Tourism to Cyprus rebounded strongly in 2023, with over 3.8 million visitors, driving over 65% of LCA’s passenger traffic. While the UK remains a pivotal market, substantial growth from markets like Poland, Germany, France, Italy, and others has bolstered recovery efforts, compensating for declines from Russian and Ukrainian markets in previous years.

Operating 24/7 and serving 55 airlines across various carrier types, LCA maintains a balanced portfolio of routes. Recent expansions include easyJet’s new routes to Belfast International Airport, Glasgow Airport, Birmingham, and Nantes, alongside Transavia France’s introduction of flights to Paris Orly.

Looking ahead, LCA aims to enhance connectivity further, particularly to European capitals. Opportunities highlighted include expanding operations to underserved markets like Madrid, Dublin, Tallinn, Lisbon, Lyon, Bournemouth, Nuremberg, and others. The airport seeks to capitalize on strong demand from markets such as Spain, Germany, Ireland, and Belgium, optimizing both peak and off-peak season travel.

As a member of Routes 360, LCA continues to explore new route opportunities to strengthen its position as a key hub in the Mediterranean region, facilitating increased air connectivity across Europe.
