On March 31, 2025, a LATAM Airlines Airbus A319-112 with the registration PR-MYM experienced a runway overrun while attempting to land at Chapecó Airport in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The aircraft was operating flight LA3277, which had departed from São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport at 17:40 local time and was bound for Chapecó. As the plane neared its destination, poor visibility forced the crew to abort their initial landing attempt. During the second approach, the aircraft touched down on Runway 29 but was unable to decelerate fully before reaching the end of the runway. Although the incident resulted in the aircraft veering off onto the grass, initial local media reports indicated that it remained undamaged and was classified as a minor overrun rather than a serious runway excursion.

Data provided by the Aviation Safety Network confirmed that none of the 112 passengers and five crew members sustained injuries during the event. In fact, video footage captured by one of the passengers and later shared by Brazilian media outlet AEROIN showed a surprising scene inside the cabin, with passengers cheering as the aircraft came to a halt on the grass after the overrun. The video added a human element to the story, capturing the relief and even a sense of celebration among those on board despite the unexpected turn of events.

The incident led to some operational disruptions at Chapecó Airport. LATAM Airlines confirmed on April 1, 2025, via an official statement posted on X, that the airline had safely disembarked all 107 passengers and five crew members from what was referred to in the statement as flight LA3276. While there appears to be a discrepancy in the flight number mentioned in the statement, the focus remained on the safe outcome for everyone on board. LATAM further noted that, later on the same day, the aircraft conducted another flight, demonstrating the airline’s ability to quickly resume normal operations despite the earlier incident.

In addition to ensuring passenger safety, the airline confirmed that it had completed the removal of the aircraft from the vicinity of the runway at Chapecó. The incident prompted LATAM to cancel several flights at the airport as a precautionary measure while airport authorities and the airline conducted a thorough review of the runway conditions and the incident itself. The decision to cancel some flights underscored the seriousness with which both the airline and airport officials treated the incident, despite the fact that there were no reported injuries or significant damage to the aircraft.

This event comes at a time when operational challenges such as adverse weather conditions continue to affect aviation safety. The aborted landing on the first attempt due to poor visibility highlights the inherent risks involved in air travel and the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols during adverse conditions. LATAM Airlines’ swift response in managing the situation, ensuring the safety of all on board, and communicating with the public and media helped to mitigate potential concerns and maintain confidence in their operational procedures. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in modern aviation and the constant need for vigilance in the face of unpredictable environmental conditions.
