LATAM Airlines Eyes Embraer E2 Jets as Potential Replacement for Aging A319 Fleet

Share

LATAM Airlines Group is reportedly in advanced discussions with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer to acquire up to 30 E195-E2 jets, fueling speculation that the South American carrier may be preparing to phase out its aging Airbus A319 fleet.

The move comes as LATAM seeks to modernize its regional operations and improve fuel efficiency across its network. With an average age of 17 years, LATAM’s 39 Airbus A319 aircraft are among the oldest in its fleet. While the airline has committed $40 million to retrofit these narrowbodies—upgrading seats, connectivity, and in-flight entertainment—the long-term strategy appears to be shifting toward newer, more efficient aircraft.

Embraer E195-E2: A Strategic Fit for Regional Growth

The Embraer E195-E2, the largest aircraft in Embraer’s E-Jet family, offers seating for up to 132 passengers and delivers a 25% reduction in fuel burn compared to previous-generation jets. Although slightly smaller than the Airbus A319—which seats 144 passengers in LATAM’s current configuration—the E195-E2 is well-suited for thinner regional routes and markets where demand does not justify larger aircraft. However, under LATAM’s existing row pitch specifications, the E195-E2 would accommodate a maximum of 132 seats, falling short of the A319’s capacity.

Industry analysts suggest that LATAM may deploy the E2 jets to complement its existing fleet rather than replace the A319s outright. The airline is also evaluating the Airbus A220, a direct competitor to the E195-E2, as part of its broader fleet renewal strategy.

Government Support and Regional Manufacturing

The Brazilian government has reportedly encouraged LATAM to consider Embraer aircraft, citing the importance of supporting domestic aerospace manufacturing and regional connectivity. A potential order would mark a significant milestone for Embraer, which has been seeking to expand its footprint among major Latin American carriers.

Fleet Modernization in Full Swing

LATAM is currently receiving deliveries of Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, signaling a broader trend toward upgauging its fleet for higher-demand routes. The addition of Embraer E2 jets would allow the airline to optimize capacity across its diverse route network, balancing efficiency with flexibility.

Also, LATAM plans to retrofit of the bulk of its existing Airbus A319 fleet. Citing a scarcity of available new aircraft, the airline group will instead be investing $40 million in upgrading 37 of its fleet of 39 A319s. The upgrades will include new economy and premium economy seats, enhanced connectivity and new in-flight entertainment.

While LATAM has not officially confirmed the Embraer order, industry insiders expect an announcement in the coming months. If finalized, the deal would represent a strategic pivot in LATAM’s fleet planning and a boost for Embraer’s presence in Latin America.
