LATAM Airlines Orders 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Adds 5 Options
LATAM Airlines Group, the premier passenger and cargo airline group in South America, has announced a significant purchase of 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with options for an additional five aircraft. This strategic move reinforces LATAM’s position as the region’s largest operator of the 787, enhancing its commitment to maintaining one of the most modern fleets in Latin America.
With this latest order, LATAM Airlines will increase its fleet of 787-9 jets to a total of 52 Dreamliners by 2030. Currently, the airline operates 37 787-8 and 787-9 models, and this investment underscores its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. The 787 Dreamliner is known for its fuel efficiency, allowing LATAM to maximize capacity on high-demand routes and expand its international network, including the recent launch of a nonstop flight to Sydney, Australia.
“The Boeing 787 is a much more efficient aircraft, allowing us to continue growing sustainably while reducing our carbon footprint,” said Ramiro Alfonsín, Chief Financial Officer of LATAM Airlines Group. He added that this order will facilitate the delivery of at least two new 787 aircraft each year from 2025 through the end of the decade, supporting the airline’s ambitious growth plans.
The 787 family of aircraft offers unmatched fuel efficiency, enabling airlines to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 25% compared to older aircraft models. The larger 787-9 variant not only extends the capacity but also enhances the range of the Dreamliner family, allowing LATAM to transport more passengers and cargo over longer distances.
Mike Wilson, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean, expressed appreciation for LATAM’s continued trust in the 787 Dreamliner family. He stated, “As demand for air travel rises, we will continue to support LATAM’s growth strategy and goal of connecting Latin America with the world.” This collaboration is vital as LATAM seeks to bolster its international operations from key hubs in Santiago, São Paulo, and Lima.
Since its entry into service in 2011, the 787 Dreamliner has facilitated the launch of over 400 new nonstop routes and has helped operators avoid more than 173 billion pounds of carbon emissions. This emphasis on sustainability aligns with LATAM’s objectives to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing its environmental impact.
The 2024 Boeing Commercial Market Outlook predicts that air travel in Latin America will more than double over the next 20 years, with an annual growth rate of 5%. With nearly 2,300 airplane deliveries expected, the region’s fleet is projected to expand to over 3,000 aircraft by 2043. This growth forecast highlights the increasing demand for air travel and the essential role that modern, fuel-efficient aircraft like the Boeing 787 will play in meeting these needs.
LATAM Airlines Group’s order for 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners represents a strategic investment in fleet modernization and sustainability, reinforcing its commitment to expanding its global reach and enhancing its operational capabilities in a rapidly growing market.
