LATAM Cargo has agreed a global lease deal with cool-chain packaging specialist Sonoco ThermoSafe for the use of the latter’s Pegasus temperature-controlled ULD bulk shipping container on LATAM flights.

The deal will enable pharma freight forwarders to access Pegasus ULDs directly from Santiago, Chile-headquartered LATAM Cargo.

The Pegasus ULD is approved by both the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) as a bulk temperature-controlled container for the transport of pharmaceuticals.

The ULD is also sustainable in its design, the Pegasus container being built from composite materials – which are also lighter than and “substantially more damage-resistant” than traditional metal containers.

Plus, Pegasus ULDs come with a fully integrated, FAA-approved telematics system that offers real-time, cloud-based information on payload and ambient temperatures, as well as key environmental factors alongside precise GPS location data.

Daniela Vial, director for product development at LATAM Cargo, commented: “LATAM Cargo continues to expand its offering for its CEIV Pharma specialty products.”

CEIV Pharma is the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics programme designed by IATA to help businesses in the air cargo supply chain to achieve pharma handling excellence.

“We believe the Pegasus ULD will be a great addition, so our clients have more options from which to choose the perfect packaging solution for the transportation of their high-value shipments,” Vial added.

“We are delighted LATAM Cargo will fly the Pegasus ULD and make the unique containers available to our mutual customers for worldwide routes in their pharma services programmes,” said Bourji Mourad, logistics and partner management at Sonoco ThermoSafe’s Bulk Rental Group.
