Lawmakers Urge Probe Into China’s OnePlus Over U.S. Security Concerns

Two U.S. lawmakers have called on the Commerce Department to investigate Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus, raising concerns that its devices sold in the United States could pose national security risks. The request was outlined in a letter reviewed by Reuters on Friday.

The letter, sent by Representatives Mike Gallagher and Raja Krishnamoorthi, urges the Department to determine whether OnePlus smartphones could be collecting sensitive user data or allowing unauthorized access to U.S. networks. Both lawmakers are members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, which has recently increased scrutiny of Chinese technology firms operating in the U.S.

OnePlus, a subsidiary of BBK Electronics, shares ownership ties with other major Chinese brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Realme. The lawmakers argue that the company’s relationship with the Chinese government and the broader ecosystem of Chinese tech manufacturers may create vulnerabilities that could be exploited for surveillance or cyber-espionage.

The lawmakers emphasized the need for a thorough security review to protect American consumers and critical infrastructure, particularly as smartphones play a central role in daily communication and data sharing. They noted that similar investigations have previously been launched into companies like Huawei and ZTE, both of which were eventually subject to restrictions due to security risks.

The Commerce Department has not yet responded publicly to the request. OnePlus has also not commented on the matter. The outcome of the proposed investigation could influence future U.S. policy on foreign-made consumer electronics and their role in national cybersecurity.
