Legislator seeks $1K/week for idled NYC hotel staff

Proponents of a New York City Council bill requiring hoteliers to pay up to $1,000 in severance to unemployed workers say it can encourage reopenings. The measure Queens Councilman Francisco Moya plans to introduce next week would apply to employees at about 40 closed hotels and take effect retroactively as of Sept. 6, when federal pandemic unemployment payments expired.
