Leonardo announced on November 5, 2024, that it has finalized a significant deal with helicopter leasing company GDHF for the acquisition of 10 AW189 super medium-sized helicopters. This agreement marks an important milestone in supporting the energy industry, with the helicopters set to be delivered between 2027 and 2029. They will primarily be allocated for use in offshore wind farm servicing and search and rescue (SAR) operations related to these activities.

GDHF has been an operator of the AW189 since early 2024, having received its first helicopter of this model. This latest purchase adds to an earlier order, bringing GDHF’s total AW189 fleet to 13 aircraft.

The AW189 helicopters, weighing between 8.3 and 8.6 tons, are designed for versatility and efficiency, capable of carrying up to 14 passengers alongside two crew members over distances of approximately 500 nautical miles (around 1,000 kilometers). Their advanced features make them particularly suitable for offshore operations, including a main transmission that can function without oil for up to 50 minutes and a built-in auxiliary power unit for added reliability.

The announcement of this deal took place during the European Rotors trade show, the largest event in the helicopter industry in Europe, which is currently being held in Amsterdam from November 4 to 7, 2024. Leonardo’s commitment to enhancing its offerings in the helicopter sector is underscored by this strategic partnership, positioning both companies to meet the growing demands of the energy market effectively.
