LIAT 2020 Ltd Set for Caribbean Skies Launch with E145s Addition
LIAT 2020 Ltd is gearing up to commence scheduled passenger operations in the Caribbean, with an anticipated launch within the next two months. This announcement was made by Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne at the 46th regular CARICOM leaders meeting, signaling a new era for regional air travel. The Caribbean Media Corporation first reported this development, highlighting the significant strides made towards the airline’s inauguration, including the acquisition of aircraft and financial investments.
In a move to bolster its fleet, LIAT 2020 Ltd has reached an agreement for the purchase of three ATR42-600s previously operated by the now-defunct LIAT (Antigua and Barbuda). Adding to this, Nigeria’s Air Peace is set to dispatch three Embraer E145s to the new carrier within the next two weeks, with the possibility of increasing the fleet size based on demand. This strategic partnership marks a crucial step in ensuring the airline’s preparedness for its service launch, although the acquisition of an Air Operator’s Certificate remains pending, posing a potential challenge to the planned timeline.
Prime Minister Browne shared that Antigua and Barbuda are committed to investing around USD25 million in the new venture, with Air Peace poised to become the majority shareholder through an investment ranging between USD80-90 million. This collaboration underscores the importance of regional connectivity to Antigua and Barbuda and aims to enhance inter-island travel within the Caribbean.
The predecessor, LIAT 1974 Ltd, operated a fleet that included three ATR42-600s, with the last flight conducted in January 2022. The transition to LIAT 2020 Ltd represents a pivotal shift towards revitalizing air travel in the region, leveraging the operational capabilities and financial backing of both the Antiguan government and Air Peace.
Air Peace’s contribution extends beyond aircraft provision; the airline brings a diverse fleet experience, encompassing a range of aircraft from Boeing 737s and 777s to Embraer jets, including the E145 model designated for LIAT 2020 Ltd.
