LifeFlight Australia Expands at Sunshine Coast

LifeFlight Australia (GDY) has officially broken ground on an AUD 18.5 million (USD 12 million) expansion project at Sunshine Coast Airport. The new facility will significantly increase the company’s hangar space, tripling the current area and enhancing operational capabilities. This major development reflects LifeFlight’s commitment to improving efficiency and supporting the growing demand for medical evacuation services.
The new base will consist of three spacious hangars with a combined area of approximately 1,500 square meters. This expansion will replace LifeFlight’s existing single hangar at Sunshine Coast Airport. The additional space is expected to improve the airline’s ability to conduct more maintenance tasks locally, reducing the need to send aircraft to its primary maintenance base at Brisbane Archerfield. By performing more maintenance on-site, LifeFlight will enhance its dispatch reliability, ensuring that its fleet is always ready for critical air ambulance missions.
The construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed by late 2025. When operational, the new base will house two AW139 helicopters and one Challenger 604 air ambulance jet. This will enable LifeFlight to respond more effectively to emergency medical calls and improve its 24-hour service capability, especially in the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay-Burnett, and South Burnett regions. As a result, the new facility will play a vital role in strengthening LifeFlight’s ability to meet the increasing demand for emergency medical services in these areas.
LifeFlight Australia, a leader in air ambulance services, operates a fleet comprising eleven helicopters and four Challenger 604 jets. These aircraft are based out of key locations, including Brisbane International and Townsville airports. The fleet provides essential services for medical emergencies, with helicopters offering rapid transportation within the state, while the Challenger jets handle long-range air ambulance flights.
The decision to expand LifeFlight’s infrastructure at Sunshine Coast Airport is a response to the growing need for more efficient air ambulance services across Queensland. With an increasing number of medical emergencies and critical patient transport requirements, LifeFlight recognized the need for a larger, more capable maintenance facility. The expansion is expected to boost the company’s capacity to respond to emergencies faster, ensuring that patients can be transported quickly and safely to medical centers for treatment.
The Sunshine Coast base will also serve as a strategic location for LifeFlight, allowing it to increase its presence in one of Queensland’s busiest regions for air ambulance services. With the new facility in place, the company will be able to optimize its fleet and operations, providing faster and more reliable services to the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas.
In addition to improving operational efficiency, the expansion demonstrates LifeFlight Australia’s commitment to maintaining its fleet in peak condition. By localizing maintenance at Sunshine Coast Airport, LifeFlight will ensure that its aircraft are always ready for emergency missions, contributing to improved patient outcomes. The expanded facility will further solidify LifeFlight’s reputation as a leading provider of air ambulance services in Queensland and across Australia.
