London Stansted Airport Expands with New Routes and Investments
At Routes World 2024 in Bahrain, London Stansted Airport (STN) shared its exciting growth trajectory and future plans. The third-largest airport in the UK, STN welcomed over 29 million passengers in 2023 and is now gearing up for further expansion. With government approval for expansion plans, the airport aims to increase capacity to accommodate up to 43 million passengers.
Already serving more than 190 destinations, STN has seen record-breaking growth, with August 2024 marking its busiest month ever, surpassing three million passengers. This growth has been fueled by new services, such as Ryanair’s 6X-weekly flights to Sarajevo, Royal Jordanian’s inaugural flights to Amman, and British Airways’ return with new routes to Split, Florence, Ibiza, and Nice.
Looking to the future, STN plans to strengthen its European connections in 2025. Transavia will introduce flights to Rotterdam in April, while Ryanair will add winter services to destinations like Reggio, Linz, Sarajevo, and Dubrovnik. Additionally, Jet2.com will expand its ski and sun program for the 2025/26 season.
Aviation Director Simon Gorrighan discussed the airport’s strategic focus on diversifying its carriers and markets, particularly in long-haul destinations such as China, India, and the U.S. “Stansted’s affluent catchment area of 25 million people within two hours makes it an ideal location to serve key global markets,” he said.
The airport’s £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) investment plan, set to unfold over the next five years, will enhance the terminal’s capacity, improve the passenger experience, and help meet sustainability goals. With this, STN aims to remain a competitive player in the global aviation market.
Stansted’s presence at Routes World 2024 underscored its commitment to building valuable airline partnerships. Gorrighan emphasized the event’s role in expanding STN’s network and fostering future growth.
