Lufthansa A380 Unveiled in 100th Anniversary Livery

Lufthansa has unveiled an Airbus A380 in a striking blue special livery to celebrate the airline’s 100th anniversary, marking another milestone in its centennial fleet transformation.

The aircraft, registered D-AIMH, landed at Munich Airport on February 26 under flight number LH9901 after receiving its commemorative paintwork in Shannon, Ireland. The design features an oversized stylized crane, Lufthansa’s iconic emblem, along with the dates “1926 | 2026” and the number “100” to mark a century since the founding of the original “Luft Hansa.”

The Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, underwent an extensive repainting process that took 34 days and involved 35 specialists. More than 4,000 square meters of surface area — roughly equivalent to 16 tennis courts — were painted, including a 47-meter-long crane graphic stretching across the fuselage. The aircraft will enter regular commercial service beginning in March.

The A380 is the fourth aircraft to receive Lufthansa’s special “100 Years” anniversary livery. Earlier this month, a blue Airbus A350-900 debuted in Munich, while a Boeing 787-9 and an Airbus A320neo based in Frankfurt are already flying in the centennial colors. Another Airbus A320neo featuring the XXL crane is scheduled to arrive in Munich shortly.

In the coming weeks, a Boeing 747-8 and an Airbus A350-1000 will also be added to the commemorative fleet. Once complete, seven aircraft across Lufthansa’s long-haul and short-haul network will operate in special anniversary liveries.

The airline said the designs are being applied during scheduled repainting cycles or at the factory for new aircraft deliveries, minimizing additional costs during the anniversary year. The special fleet presentation underscores Lufthansa’s effort to honor its aviation heritage while showcasing its modern aircraft lineup during its centennial celebrations.
