Lufthansa Cargo Expands Partnerships in China with Key MoUs
Lufthansa Cargo is reinforcing its strategic presence in China by signing three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Shanghai Airport Authorities, Air China Cargo, and China Postal Express & Logistics. The announcements were made on November 6, 2024, highlighting the country’s rapid growth as a “global economic powerhouse” with significant potential in the airfreight sector.
The first MoU, signed with the Shanghai Airport Authority, aims to enhance collaboration in developing Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) into a leading competitive hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The Shanghai Airport Authority, a state-owned entity overseeing both Pudong and Hongqiao (SHA) airports, will work alongside Lufthansa Cargo to “enhance operational efficiencies and improve customer experiences.”
“Shanghai is the biggest freight hub for Lufthansa Cargo next to our hub in Frankfurt,” said Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo. He expressed confidence that the MoU will further strengthen the airline’s contributions to this strategically vital market. Since forming a partnership with Shanghai Airport Group in 1999, Lufthansa Cargo has benefited from a range of services, including warehousing, customs clearance, and logistics management.
The second MoU was signed with Air China Cargo, the dedicated cargo subsidiary of Air China, during a ceremony in Shanghai in October 2024. This partnership aims to improve service offerings for customers and enhance the logistics corridor between China and Germany, according to Jun Li, CEO of Air China Cargo.
Additionally, Lufthansa Cargo has entered into a strategic partnership with China Postal Express & Logistics, a subsidiary of China Post. Both companies are committed to advancing cooperation in areas such as joint innovation, capacity enhancement, digitalization, and environmentally sustainable development.
Lufthansa Cargo’s operations in China began in the late 1990s, launching a freight service between Shanghai and Frankfurt in 1997. Over the years, the airline has expanded its network to include multiple cargo routes to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Taipei. In 2024, it also introduced a new route from Zhengzhou and Shenzhen to Frankfurt, further solidifying its commitment to the Chinese market.
