Lufthansa City Airlines Expands Fleet and Network
Lufthansa City Airlines took delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo on April 8, 2025, at the Airbus final assembly plant at Hamburg-Finkenwerder Airport. The aircraft, registered as D-AIJP and named “Ingelheim am Rhein,” marks a significant milestone for the carrier, which has been rapidly expanding its fleet since its launch. As a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, the Munich-based airline began operations in June 2024 with a focus on short- and medium-haul flights within Europe.
Its initial fleet comprised aircraft drawn from the Lufthansa mainline, but the introduction of this new A320neo signals a shift towards modern, efficient aircraft as part of an ambitious fleet renewal program.
This delivery is a part of a broader order placed by the Lufthansa Group for narrowbody jets, and it represents the carrier’s commitment to strengthening its competitive edge in the short-haul market. The new Airbus A320neo joins a fleet that already includes four Airbus A319s and three A320neos, all previously operated by parent airline Lufthansa. With this latest addition, the Lufthansa City Airlines fleet now totals eight aircraft. Plans are in place to further expand the fleet by adding at least eight more A320neos and additional A319s over the next twelve months.
In a separate development, Lufthansa placed an order with Airbus in December 2023 for 40 A220-300 aircraft, with 20 additional purchase options, all earmarked for Lufthansa City Airlines for deliveries scheduled to start at the end of 2026.
According to a statement from the airline, the introduction of this first brand-new A320neo is a clear demonstration of the crucial role Lufthansa City Airlines plays within the Lufthansa Group. The carrier is expected to redefine continental traffic to and from key hubs in Munich and, from 2026, Frankfurt, thereby consolidating the market position of the group and supporting planned growth on long-haul routes. The new aircraft will be delivered starting from May 2025 and will offer seating for 180 passengers in a single-class configuration. Consistent with the airline’s focus on passenger comfort and efficiency, the A320neo is equipped with the new Airspace cabin design, which features larger overhead bins, a modern lighting system, and improved seating arrangements.
Peter Albers, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, expressed his enthusiasm following the official handover, noting that the new aircraft serves as both a motivation and an incentive for the airline’s employees, who are integral to its ongoing success and growth. Alongside the fleet expansion, Lufthansa City Airlines is also focused on growing its route network across Europe. For the summer flight schedule in 2025, the airline will add seven new destinations, including major European cities such as Barcelona, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville, and Bordeaux. With these new routes, the carrier’s network will expand to 17 destinations and 18 routes spanning eight European countries.
