Lufthansa Group Boosts Fleet with Five More Airbus A350-1000s

The Lufthansa Group has expanded its commitment to the Airbus A350-1000, placing an additional order for five of the advanced long-haul aircraft. This latest acquisition brings the total number of A350-1000s on firm order to fifteen, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030. The order, valued at approximately $2 billion at list prices, is part of the group’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy.

With this new order, the Lufthansa Group’s total commitments to the A350 series (including both the A350-900 and A350-1000 models) rise to 75 aircraft. To date, 28 of these planes have already been put into service, with another 47 expected to be delivered by 2031.

The decision to purchase additional A350-1000s follows an initial order of ten placed in March 2023, with the first of these aircraft set to be delivered in April 2026. Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, highlighted the importance of the investment, stating, “Today’s order underscores our great confidence in our long-standing, close and successful partnership with Airbus. With the state-of-the-art A350 long-haul jets, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our history.”

Spohr emphasized the dual benefits of the fleet upgrade, noting, “We are investing more than ever before in our history to make air transport more sustainable, to achieve our CO₂ reduction targets and at the same time offer our customers the highest level of comfort with a first-class travel experience.”

He also reflected on the long-standing relationship between Lufthansa and Airbus, mentioning, “Lufthansa Group has ordered 770 aircraft from Airbus throughout its history and is proud to be Airbus’ largest customer worldwide.”

The integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group in January will further increase the group’s Airbus fleet by adding another 100 short- and long-haul aircraft. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to phase out older four-engine aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340 models, replacing them with more fuel-efficient, twin-engine A350 jets.

This fleet modernization is not only a step towards meeting environmental targets but also aims to enhance the overall passenger experience, reinforcing Lufthansa’s position as a leader in the global aviation market.
