Panasonic Avionics Corporation (PAC) has been selected by Lufthansa to provide its NEXT in-flight entertainment (IFE) system and connectivity solutions for the carrier’s Boeing 747-8 fleet. The NEXT systems will be retrofitted on Lufthansa’s 19 Boeing 747-8s, with the first due to be rolled out in summer 2024.

This IFE system upgrade will provide Lufthansa’s passengers with an immersive cinematic experience using the latest 4K screen technology, with faster network speeds and higher storage capacity.

In business class, passengers will enjoy 4K displays of up to 24in, a 10in control unit, USB–A, -C and AC power, and wireless charging pads. Premium economy class passengers will experience upgraded 16in 4K screens, with 13-in 4K screens in economy class, both with high-power USB-A and USB-C charging.

The companies also announced the renewal of PAC’s broadband connectivity services, which are already installed on Lufthansa’s widebody aircraft fleet, and use PAC’s global network of high-speed, high-bandwidth satellites. Mobile phone connectivity will also be upgraded to 4G speeds on Lufthansa’s B747-8 aircraft.

Ken Sain, CEO of Panasonic Avionics, said that the NEXT Series IFE and latest-generation connectivity on board will help drive greater passenger loyalty and add value to the Lufthansa brand.

Paul Estoppey, head of cabin product management at Lufthansa Group, stated: “Our Boeing 747-8s are an integral part of our long-haul fleet, and we’re confident that this investment in Panasonic Avionics’ in-flight entertainment will be popular with our passengers.”
