Lufthansa to Resume Munich-Johannesburg Flights in 2024 after 20 Years

Lufthansa is set to resume flights between Munich (MUC) and Johannesburg (JNB) from June 4, 2024. The airline will operate this route using its Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which offers three classes of service and can accommodate a total of 293 passengers.

The flight schedule for this route includes departures from Munich on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10:30 PM, with arrival in Johannesburg at 9:00 AM the following morning. Return flights from Johannesburg will depart at 8:25 PM, reaching Munich at 5:10 AM the next day, with a flight duration of approximately 11 hours.

Lufthansa’s decision to reinstate this route is driven by the growing demand for travel to South Africa, particularly among leisure and business travelers from Germany and Europe. The Munich-Johannesburg route will also provide convenient connectivity to other destinations in Africa, Asia, and Australia through Lufthansa’s Munich hub.

It’s worth noting that Lufthansa previously operated flights between Munich and Johannesburg from 1999 to 2004 but suspended the service due to low profitability. Currently, the airline offers daily flights between Johannesburg and Frankfurt (FRA) using its Boeing 747-8 aircraft.

With the reintroduction of the Munich-Johannesburg route, Lufthansa will become the only European carrier offering two nonstop services to Johannesburg from different hubs in Germany. This move will also put Lufthansa in competition with South African Airways, which operates daily flights between Johannesburg and Munich.
