Luxair, the national airline of Luxembourg, has unveiled plans for a significant route expansion for the summer 2026 season, adding up to nine new destinations with a strong focus on leisure travel. Announced on July 15, 2025, the move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to tap into high-demand holiday markets across Europe and North Africa.

The new destinations from Luxembourg Airport (LUX) include Girona in Spain, Edinburgh in Scotland, Helsinki in Finland, Tunis in Tunisia, Alicante and Bilbao in Spain, Zakynthos and Patras-Araxos in Greece, and Porto Santo, a small Portuguese island near Madeira. These seasonal routes will be launched between late March and early July 2026.

Flights to Girona, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Tunis, Alicante, and Bilbao will operate twice weekly, while services to the Greek and Portuguese destinations will be offered once a week, catering to summer vacationers and sun-seekers. The majority of these routes are expected to appeal to leisure travelers looking for warm-weather escapes and culturally rich destinations.

Luxair plans to use a combination of Boeing 737s and DeHavilland Canada DHC-8 Q400 turboprops on these routes, depending on demand and aircraft availability. As of June 2025, Luxair operates a fleet of 21 aircraft, including 10 Boeing 737s—comprising four -700s, four -800s, and two MAX 8s—and 11 Q400 turboprops.

Looking ahead, Luxair is also set to expand its fleet with the addition of six Embraer E195-E2 jets, the first of which is expected to arrive in early 2026. These next-generation aircraft, offering improved efficiency and comfort, could be introduced on the new summer routes once delivered.

The airline’s expansion reflects a broader industry trend of shifting toward point-to-point leisure-focused services, particularly in the post-pandemic travel landscape. Luxair’s new destinations underscore its ambition to diversify its route network and strengthen its presence in popular tourist markets, offering more choice to travelers departing from Luxembourg.

With this strategic addition of summer routes, Luxair aims to capture a greater share of seasonal travel demand and reinforce its position as a key regional carrier in Europe.
