Malawi’s Flytech Awaits Approval for Regional Passenger Flights

Malawian start-up Flytech Aviation, based at Lilongwe International Airport, is awaiting regulatory clearance to launch international passenger services to neighbouring and regional markets, including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya.
Chief executive Fortunate Simeon told ch-aviation that the airline is seeking final route approval from the Malawi Civil Aviation Authority and the government to operate flights from Lilongwe to Maputo, Harare International, Dar es Salaam, and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International airports.
Flytech’s fleet has now grown to six aircraft, with the most recent addition being a De Havilland Canada DHC-8-Q400, registered as 7Q-DAL. Simeon confirmed the turboprop is being leased from Somalia-based Daallo Airlines. The airline has also acquired a Piper PA-28-140, registered 7Q-FOS, to support domestic charter operations.
The carrier’s passenger fleet further includes two Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia aircraft, registered as 7Q-YEA and 7Q-YES, as well as a DC-9-10, registered 7Q-SAZ. In December 2024, the DC-9-10 was ferried from Nairobi to Hargeisa to operate on behalf of virtual carrier Aerojet in Somalia.
According to ch-aviation fleet data, Flytech also operates at least one DC-9-30 freighter, registered 7Q-MAX, which was previously operated by Astral Aviation.
Flytech Aviation was registered and certified by the Malawi Ministry of Transport in June 2024 and submitted applications for domestic and regional route approvals in March 2025 as it prepares to expand scheduled passenger services across Southern and East Africa.
