Malaysia Airlines and IndiGo Launch New Codeshare Agreement
Malaysia Airlines and Indian budget carrier IndiGo have established a codeshare agreement to improve connectivity for travelers between Malaysia and India. This partnership allows Malaysia Airlines to expand its network significantly within India by adding its flight code “MH” to seven domestic destinations operated by IndiGo.
These Indian destinations include Kolkata-Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), Varanasi International Airport (VNS), Patna Jay Prakash Narayan Airport (PAT), Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ), Goa Dabolim Airport (GOI), Bhubaneswar Biju Patnaik Airport (BBI), and Visakhapatnam Airport (VTZ). This extension complements Malaysia Airlines’ existing direct flights to ten major Indian cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, among others.
Conversely, IndiGo will place its “6E” code on several of Malaysia Airlines’ domestic routes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) Terminal 1. These routes include flights to Penang International Airport (PEN), Langkawi International Airport (LGK), Johor Bahru Senai International Airport (JHB), Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KBI), and Kuching International Airport (KCH).
Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership, highlighting the significant potential of the Indian market for leisure and business travel. “This collaboration allows us to offer Malaysia Airlines customers greater access to India’s rich cultural and economic landscape, while warmly welcoming IndiGo passengers to experience the unique charm of Malaysian Hospitality,” Ismail stated.
Ismail also noted the strategic nature of this partnership, emphasizing its role in boosting tourism growth between the nations, especially considering the visa-free entry agreement for tourists from both countries. “Our goal is to provide more travel options, enhanced connectivity, and a seamless travel experience for our valued customers,” he added.
This codeshare agreement was formalized following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two airlines in April 2024. The partnership aims to facilitate travel between the two countries, leveraging the extensive network and operational strengths of both airlines to enhance the flying experience for passengers.
