Malaysia Airlines Considers More Widebody Orders to 2040s

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, is preparing for three widebody fleet campaigns that could shape its aircraft strategy through the 2040s, according to Managing Director Izham Ismail. MAG also oversees Firefly, Amal by Malaysia Airlines, and MASwings, which is set to be transferred to the Sarawak government later this year.
The first campaign involves deciding whether to exercise options on its existing order for twenty Airbus A330-900neos, placed in 2022. MAG has received three aircraft so far, with seven more expected this year. The group is currently evaluating the need to convert some or all of its 20 options into firm orders.
The second campaign involves selecting a long-range widebody type for future expansion beyond the A330neo deliveries. Aircraft under consideration include the Airbus A350-900, Boeing 787, and Boeing 777-9. Ismail noted that production slots are increasingly scarce after 2031, especially for the A350 and 787, while the Boeing 777-9—though not yet in production—could be viable if configured with a three-class cabin.
A third campaign focuses on renewing the cargo fleet at MASkargo, where three aging A330-200Fs may be replaced by new freighters or passenger-to-freighter conversions of existing A330-200s. MAG currently outsources narrowbody cargo flights.
Ismail emphasized that the group’s strategy is aimed at securing capacity into the 2040s, given the long lead times and capital commitments required for widebody acquisitions. In parallel, MAG is progressing with its narrowbody renewal, transitioning from Boeing 737-800s to 737-8s and 737-10s.
