Malaysia Airlines Resumes Kolkata Flights After 18 Years
Malaysia Airlines has reestablished direct flights to Kolkata, India, after an 18-year hiatus. The service, which began on December 2, 2024, operates five times weekly, connecting Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU). The three-hour, 45-minute journey is serviced by the airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines at Malaysia Airlines Group, expressed enthusiasm about the route’s relaunch. “We are delighted to recommence direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and the bustling metropolis of Kolkata, strengthening the bond between Malaysia and India while opening exciting opportunities for both leisure and business travelers,” Azmi said. He also emphasized the airline’s commitment to delivering luxurious and culturally rich travel experiences, inviting passengers to explore Kolkata’s vibrant heritage and dynamic cityscapes.
The new service significantly enhances Malaysia Airlines’ network in India, complementing its existing codeshare partnership with IndiGo. Since October 2024, Malaysia Airlines’ flight code “MH” has been added to seven domestic Indian destinations, including Varanasi, Patna, Tiruchirappalli, Goa, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam. This partnership expands Malaysia Airlines’ reach to 16 destinations across India, offering seamless connectivity for travelers.
India’s strong historical and cultural ties with Malaysia further highlight the importance of this route. Indians constitute the second-largest minority group in Malaysia, with the country hosting one of the world’s largest Indian diasporas. This direct service is expected to foster deeper connections and boost travel between the two nations, serving both business and leisure markets.
