Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is experiencing significant growth in air travel, surpassing pre-pandemic levels with 73 airlines currently operating in Malaysia, an increase from 69 in 2019. With nearly 90% of its airline capacity restored compared to 2019, MAHB is strategically positioning itself for future expansion, as stated by Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin, senior general manager of strategy at Malaysia Airports.

Recent milestones include the launch of Air India’s daily flights from New Delhi (DEL) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL), along with British Airways’ upcoming daily service from London Heathrow to KUL, originally slated for November but now set to commence in April 2025. This expansion underscores the airport’s commitment to enhancing global connectivity.

The airline landscape is also seeing improved connectivity with China, where 16 airlines are now operating between Malaysia and China, serving 29 destinations—an increase from 12 airlines and 27 destinations before the pandemic. The Malaysian government’s visa-free entry policy for travelers from China and India is expected to further boost this positive trend, particularly in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, as noted by Aminuddin.

Looking ahead, MAHB is targeting underserved markets in Europe, North America, and Africa to broaden its network with direct and indirect routes. This strategic initiative includes collaborations with government and tourism agencies to attract more airlines and facilitate operations to various destinations throughout Malaysia. By enhancing air connectivity, MAHB aims to capitalize on the increasing demand for travel and solidify Malaysia’s position as a key player in the global aviation market.
