Malaysia’s newest low-cost carrier MYAirline prepares for take off
A new low-cost carrier from Malaysia is gearing up to enter the skies. MYAirline is in the final stages of preparation, and is planning to commence operations in the last quarter of 2022.
While details of the exact launch date and the airline’s first destinations have not yet been revealed, the airline’s CEO Rayner Teo told local news outlet Malaysia Now that it would begin operating with three Airbus A320-200 aircraft to provide domestic flight operations.
Teo said that the popularity of low-cost carriers in the region’s consumer market is what drove the idea to establish MYAirline.
AirAsia, considered a successful Malaysian low-cost carrier, has just celebrated its 20th year.
Teo said that MYAirline has plans to expand to regional and international flights in the future.
“But we want to keep the flight range within four hours, because that’s the sweet spot when it comes to low-cost carrier operations,” Teo said.
In February 2021, MYAirline Sdn Bhd submitted an application with the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) to operate as a low-cost carrier.
Teo also said that the airline will stick to the core principles of low-cost airline operations by focusing only on the use of narrow-body aircraft.
In December 2021, MAVCOM approved the issuance of Conditional Approval for an Air Service Licence to MYAirline for a period of one year until December 31, 2022.
