Marseille Provence Airport Targets New Routes for Growth

Share

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) is seeking to expand its route network, focusing on underserved and unserved destinations to attract new traffic and enhance connectivity. The airport, located in France’s second-largest city, served over 10.8 million passengers in 2023 and connects to more than 130 nonstop destinations across 35 countries. It recently opened a new terminal in June 2024, further boosting its capacity.

Southern France, a key tourist region drawing 30 million visitors annually, benefits from MRS’s strategic position. The airport also serves a catchment area of over 6.5 million people, combining economic and tourism interests.

Recent developments at MRS include the launch of a new intercontinental route to Shanghai, operated by China Eastern Airlines with three weekly flights, providing access to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Additionally, Ryanair has added five new destinations for the summer 2024 schedule: Limoges, Reggio di Calabria, Tirana, Wroclaw, and Zagreb, bringing its total routes from MRS to 62.

Transavia France has also expanded its offerings with new direct routes to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) and Antalya (AYT), among others. Recent additions include routes to Bordeaux, Dubai, Hurghada, and Yerevan, catering to Marseille’s Armenian community.

MRS has also welcomed Ryanair’s route to Amman and Austrian Airlines’ inaugural service to Vienna in the past year.
