MASwings Employees Secure Jobs in Transition to AirBorneo After Sarawak Takeover

Following the Sarawak state government’s recent acquisition of MASwings, headquartered in Kota Kinabalu, assurances have been made regarding the job security of its approximately 300 existing employees. The Borneo Post reports that as the airline transitions to its new identity as AirBorneo, all current employees will be retained, with any future external recruitment aimed primarily at filling vacancies left by those who opt not to stay.
Sarawak state transport minister Lee Kim Shin emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving the jobs of existing staff before considering new hires. “Our priority is to retain all existing staff,” Lee stated, noting that any vacancies post-transition would be open to airline personnel from other companies looking to join the newly branded AirBorneo.
The acquisition and the rebranding efforts are expected to take up to one year to complete, with plans to relocate the headquarters to Kuching and potentially expand the fleet and service routes. While specific details about the expansion are still under wraps, there is talk of acquiring larger aircraft and extending flights to cities across Southeast Asia.
MASwings, which primarily operates within Borneo, connecting cities to smaller towns and villages, benefits from subsidies by the Malaysian government for many of its routes. These subsidized services are expected to continue without interruption under AirBorneo, with the possibility of introducing jets and exploring longer-range routes in the future as part of a broader strategic growth plan.
