MaxAir Nigeria Suspends Flights Until Early Q2 2025 Amid Audit

Nigeria’s MaxAir has suspended flight operations for three months starting January 31, 2025, as the airline undergoes a safety and economic audit by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The review follows a January 28 incident in which MaxAir’s sole Boeing 737-400, 5N-MBD, suffered a nose wheel collapse and rear tire burst upon landing at Kano.
The NCAA stated that the safety audit will assess MaxAir’s operational procedures, personnel, and aircraft, while the economic audit will evaluate the airline’s financial stability to ensure sustained safe operations. The airline’s return to service will depend on the audit’s outcome.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an inquiry into the Kano incident, with NCAA support. This is not the first time MaxAir has faced scrutiny. In July 2023, NCAA suspended the airline’s 737 fleet following multiple safety incidents, including an emergency landing in May 2023 due to a landing gear failure and an aborted takeoff in July 2023 caused by high exhaust gas temperature.
Currently, MaxAir’s active fleet includes a Learjet 45XR and a Legacy 600, with five Boeing 737-300s and three Boeing 747-400s listed as inactive. The airline operates seven domestic routes.
MaxAir’s temporary suspension raises concerns about its future operations, as Nigerian aviation regulators intensify oversight to enhance airline safety and economic viability.
