MaxAir Resumes Domestic Flights After Safety Review

MaxAir, based in Nigeria, has announced the resumption of its domestic operations starting March 21, following clearance from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The airline made the announcement on social media, celebrating its return to the skies.

The NCAA officially gave MaxAir the green light to resume its flights at midnight on March 17, confirming that the airline had met all safety and operational requirements. MaxAir had voluntarily suspended its domestic services on January 31 for a period of 90 days after a series of in-flight incidents. These incidents prompted the NCAA to conduct a detailed safety and economic audit of the airline.

During a two-day audit conducted from February 26 to 28, the NCAA re-inspected MaxAir’s organization, personnel, procedures, and aircraft in line with Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Regulations (CARs). NCAA spokesman Michael Avchimugu assured the public that the airline had successfully completed the audit, and the regulator would continue to closely monitor the airline’s compliance with the necessary safety standards.

This audit followed a series of incidents involving MaxAir aircraft. Notably, a B737-400 (5N-MBD) experienced a nose-wheel landing gear collapse and a rear tyre burst during a landing in Kano on January 28, 2024. This incident followed another similar event on May 7, 2023, when the same aircraft lost one of its main landing gears during a flight between Yola and Abuja. Additionally, on July 11, 2023, a high exhaust gas temperature led to an aborted takeoff in Kano with the same aircraft. Earlier in July 2023, fuel contamination caused the auxiliary power unit of a B737-300 (5N-MHM) to shut down at Yola. The aircraft also had to return to Abuja due to an overheating duct warning on the same day.

The NCAA’s heightened scrutiny of MaxAir is not without precedent. The airline has been involved in 11 reported incidents and accidents, including three serious events. These incidents span several years, with earlier occurrences dating back to 2019.

MaxAir’s return to domestic service comes after a significant safety review, and with the assurance that the airline has taken the necessary steps to meet safety regulations. The NCAA’s continued oversight will ensure that MaxAir adheres to the required standards moving forward.
