Meliá Hotels International has announced its first property in Bahrain, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion across the Middle East. The new Meliá Hotels & Resorts project will be located on Amwaj Island, an upscale, master-planned destination just 15 minutes from Bahrain International Airport.

Set to open in 2027, the resort will feature 256 units, including 150 hotel rooms and 106 branded residences, all managed by Meliá Hotels International. This hybrid model reflects the company’s growing focus on blending luxury hospitality with residential ownership to meet the region’s increasing demand for premium lifestyle experiences.

The property will offer a holistic luxury experience centered on wellness, design, and personalized service, including five swimming pools, diverse dining venues, landscaped gardens, retail outlets, wellness facilities, and meeting spaces. A key highlight will be Beso Beach, the internationally acclaimed beach club concept, featuring Mediterranean cuisine, private cabanas, and exclusive member areas.

Bahrain’s tourism industry has seen rapid growth, welcoming over 10 million visitors in 2023, with projections to exceed 14 million by 2026, supported by major infrastructure investments and a national tourism diversification strategy.

“Bahrain represents a unique opportunity to strengthen our presence in the Middle East,” said Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International. “Its growing influence as a travel destination and development of high-value tourism experiences make it a strategic hub for our brands and a vital part of our long-term global vision.”

Amwaj Island’s combination of privacy, sea views, and easy access to the capital makes it an ideal setting for Meliá’s latest expansion into one of the Gulf’s most dynamic hospitality markets.
