MGM Empire City Casino: A Visionary Transformation by MGM Resorts

Share

MGM Resorts International has unveiled an ambitious plan for the transformation of Empire City Casino in Yonkers, New York. The current property, operating under a lottery license since October 2006 with video lottery terminals and electronic table games, is set to be rebranded as MGM Empire City, pending the approval of a commercial casino license.

A New World-Class Entertainment Hub

The proposed phase-one design of MGM Empire City is extensive and includes a comprehensive casino floor expansion, a new entertainment venue with a 5,000-seat capacity, a high-tech BetMGM sportsbook, and an array of dining options led by renowned chefs. The vision is to transition from a video lottery terminal racino to a full-scale commercial casino with live-dealer table games, state-of-the-art slot machines, and an exclusive high-limit gaming area.

Culinary Excellence and Entertainment

MGM Empire City aims to elevate its dining experience by introducing a modern steakhouse, an Italian-American quick-serve restaurant, and an authentic Asian noodle bar. These new eateries will complement the existing Big Kitchen food court and The Pub sports bar, which are also slated for reimagining.

The proposed entertainment venue is expected to be a first in the region, offering a state-of-the-art theater capable of hosting A-list performers and high-profile events. This development aligns with MGM Resorts’ reputation as a leading entertainment provider and the third-largest ticket seller for live performances in the United States.

Sports Betting and Gaming Expansion

A key feature of the new development is the BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge. This immersive space is designed to enhance the game-day experience with a 112-foot wrap-around LED screen, stadium seating, VIP areas, and betting kiosks. Empire City’s casino floor, one of the largest in the MGM Resorts’ U.S. portfolio and in the country, will also see significant enhancements.

Preserving Historical Significance

MGM Resorts shows its commitment to Yonkers’ heritage by continuing operations at the historic Yonkers Raceway, a harness-racing track operational since 1899. The company has invested significantly in renovating this iconic site.

Economic and Employment Boost

The project, contingent on securing a commercial casino license, is expected to generate over $1 billion in new economic activity for the region. MGM Empire City is already a major tax contributor and employer in Yonkers, and the expansion is projected to create more than 10,000 indirect and induced jobs.

The Road Ahead

The process and timeline for obtaining the commercial casino license are in the hands of the state’s Gaming Facility Location Board. MGM Resorts’ application for one of the three available full commercial casino licenses in New York State will determine the future of this transformative project.
