Miami Airport to Add Concourse K, Boosting Passenger Capacity

Miami International Airport is set for a major expansion following the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners’ approval of Concourse K on May 21. The $600.6 million project is part of the airport’s $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action plan, designed to meet rising passenger and cargo demand through 2040.
The new Concourse K will add six gates, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, updated baggage handling systems, and enhanced airfield infrastructure. The upgrades aim to support MIA’s projected capacity of 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040.
Key components of the expansion include the design and construction of six contact gates, a new aircraft apron with a jet fuel hydrant system, two baggage make-up carousels, and upgrades to the baggage system connecting the Central and South Terminals. The project also targets LEED Silver certification for sustainable building practices.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called the project transformative, highlighting that MIA has not added a new terminal since 2007. “Concourse K will boost capacity, create jobs, and strengthen MIA’s role as a global gateway,” she said.
In 2024, MIA handled nearly 56 million passengers and over 3 million U.S. tons of freight, reflecting the urgent need for expansion. Construction is expected to begin after a groundbreaking ceremony this summer, with completion slated for Spring 2029.
Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture, LLC will serve as the general contractor, with Perez & Perez Architects Planners, Inc. as the lead architect on this milestone airport modernization project.
