Millennials Lead the Charge for Air Taxis, According to Honeywell Survey

Research conducted by Honeywell Aerospace has revealed that millennials are the most eager demographic group to embrace air taxis in the future. A survey of 1,000 U.S.-based fliers found that 65% of millennials, defined as individuals born between 1981 and 1996, expressed interest in using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This enthusiasm surpassed the overall respondent rate of 58%.

The survey also highlighted that regular travelers, those who fly ten or more times annually, were particularly enthusiastic about air taxis, with 67% supporting the concept. On the other hand, only 56% of those who flew ten times or fewer in the past year were keen on the idea of using eVTOLs.

Interestingly, business travelers showed more interest in eVTOL flights than leisure travelers. Among the survey participants, the top reason for wanting to use an air taxi was to travel between cities within 100 miles (41%), followed by the desire to travel from a suburban airport to a city center (31%) or to catch a connecting flight in a nearby city (28%).

One of the major draws of air taxis is the ability to avoid traffic, with 98% of respondents open to considering eVTOLs as part of their travel journey. Dave Shilliday, Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Air Mobility at Honeywell Aerospace, commented, “Anyone who travels regularly knows that the journey to and from the airport often adds unwelcome time, cost, and hassle to the overall trip. Air taxis can offer a safe, fast, and innovative alternative to traditional transport methods.”

While enthusiasm for eVTOLs is high, safety remains a significant concern. The survey showed that 65% of respondents prioritized safety when considering new transportation methods. Public acceptance is also viewed as a key challenge for air taxi developers, with negative opinions potentially hindering the adoption of this technology.

Despite the excitement surrounding air taxis, some critics argue that only the wealthiest individuals will be able to afford such services. However, the growing interest in eVTOLs signals that they may soon become an integral part of the travel experience.

The Honeywell Aerospace survey, conducted by Wakefield Research, included 1,000 U.S. adults who have taken at least five round-trip flights in the past 12 months.
