Mirus’ Kestrel takes off in Hamburg

Among the many seating highlights at this week’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg was the launch of Kestrel, Mirus Aircraft Seating’s latest fixed-back economy-class seat model. The seat has been optimised for short- to medium-range operations, for all carriers, whether ultra-low cost or premium carriers.

The headline figure for Kestrel is its weight, which is 7.5kg (16.5 lbs). Mirus also says it has potential for installation at a 28in (71cm) seat pitch. Several custom trim and finish options are available for Kestrel, as well as additional features such as USB ports, PED holders and literature pocket options.

Mirus has multiple patents pending on the Kestrel’s design, centred around its maintainability, extended durability testing, low part-count and reduced layering of components.

Another option is an extended warranty, which Mirus says will dramatically lower the lifetime cost of ownership and enables airlines to expect a return on their investment within a few years.

CEO of Mirus Aircraft Seating, Ben McGuire, said at the reveal, “Whilst initially intended for the shorter-range market, the exceptional comfort and living space Kestrel offers means we are seeing strong interest from airlines flying much longer routes as they seek maximum cabin densification without compromising passenger comfort. We are working with a group of airlines in strategic markets and expect to announce our initial launch customers later this year.”

Mcguire added, “Currently available for Airbus A320 and B737 aircraft types, Kestrel is a game-changer in enhancing cabin appearance, reducing weight, reducing cost of ownership and extending seat life compared to previous-generation economy seats, and probably all of the seats being offered in the market today.”

Kestrel joins Mirus’ flagship product, the Hawk seat, in the company’s range of aircraft seating. More than 120,000 Hawk seats are in service with airlines around the world, with major customers including Air Asia and TUI Group.
