MSC Cruises has made a historic return to mainland China, becoming the first international cruise line to resume operations in the region post-pandemic. The MSC Bellissima’s maiden call in Shanghai signifies a major milestone, not only for MSC Cruises but also for the revival of the international cruise industry in China. This momentous occasion was celebrated with a gathering of MSC Cruises’ executives, Chinese government officials, travel agents, media members, and partners onboard the company’s Asian flagship.

Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “MSC Bellissima’s maiden call in Shanghai reaffirms our commitment to a market that continues to hold strategic importance for our brand.” This commitment is further evidenced by the MSC Bellissima’s scheduled homeporting in Shanghai, Keelung, and Shenzhen throughout the summer of 2024. Additionally, MSC Splendida is set to operate from Shenzhen and Xiamen from December 2024 to April 2025, with MSC Bellissima returning to Shanghai in January 2025.

This expansion marks MSC Cruises as the only international cruise brand to operate two ships from four major Chinese ports within the first year of its return to the region. “Our aim is to bring a modern Asian flagship to the region, invest further in China, and support the local economy. We are committed to advancing the high-quality development of the cruise industry here, promoting cultural tourism, and supporting the home port markets,” Onorato added.

A standout feature of both MSC Bellissima and MSC Splendida is their shore power capability, allowing the ships to switch off their engines and eliminate local emissions while docked. This technological advancement underscores MSC Cruises’ dedication to environmental stewardship and its ambition to lead the way towards a more sustainable future in cruising.

MSC Cruises’ pioneering return to mainland China with MSC Bellissima and the deployment of MSC Splendida represent a significant leap forward for the cruise industry in Asia. By prioritizing sustainability, cultural tourism, and the local economy, MSC Cruises is setting a new standard for international cruise operations in the region.
