Myanmar Airways International Expands Fleet with First ATR72 for Domestic Growth

Myanmar Airways International (MAI), a key player in Myanmar’s aviation sector based in Yangon, has marked a significant milestone in its operational expansion by welcoming its first ATR72-600 aircraft. The newly acquired turboprop, which arrived from Kuala Lumpur Subang on March 24, is set to be registered locally as XY-AMU (msn 1039). This strategic addition is poised to bolster MAI’s domestic network, enhancing its service offerings and facilitating increased travel frequencies within Myanmar.

The introduction of the ATR72-600 into MAI’s fleet underscores the airline’s commitment to strategic growth and service excellence. It enables both MAI and its sister airline, Mingalar, to push forward with their expansion plans, offering more affordable and accessible travel options to passengers. The move reflects the airlines’ dedication to connecting diverse destinations across Myanmar and the broader region, making travel more convenient for their customers.

Previously operated by Virgin Australia under the registration VH-FVN, the 11.62-year-old aircraft transitions to MAI after being in storage since early 2020. Virgin Australia had phased out its ATR72 fleet, paving the way for this aircraft’s new lease on life with MAI.

The ATR72 joins MAI’s diverse fleet, which includes a mix of Airbus A319-100s, A320-200s (with two on wet-lease), Embraer E190s, and a wet-leased Boeing 737-300(F). This expansion not only strengthens MAI’s domestic operations but also supports its growing regional presence. With new scheduled services to key destinations such as Chiang Mai, Vientiane, Dhaka, and Doha Hamad International commencing between April and June, MAI is significantly enhancing its international route network, offering passengers more travel options and reinforcing its position in the competitive aviation market.
