Nashville International Airport (BNA) has completed the extension of Concourse D, marking the first major milestone in its $3 billion “New Horizon” modernization program. The expanded concourse, set to open July 8, adds five new gates, bringing the total on Concourse D to 11 and the entire terminal’s gate count to 60.

The project added 160,000 square feet to BNA’s terminal footprint, including 22,000 square feet of concessions space and a 165-foot moving walkway. The upgrades aim to improve passenger flow and enhance amenities as the airport prepares for long-term growth.

With the Concourse D extension completed, BNA is shifting its focus to a full rebuild of Concourse A. That project, expected to be finished in July 2028, will replace the existing six gates with 16 new ones. Additional improvements under the New Horizon initiative include an expanded central ramp (set for completion in 2027), upgraded baggage handling systems (2028), improved terminal access roadways (2029), more employee parking, and rental car facility enhancements.

BNA currently serves about 12 million passengers annually, with Southwest Airlines commanding over 50% of the airport’s traffic. However, the airport is planning for future capacity of up to 40 million passengers per year.

To meet that goal, BNA is also planning a second passenger terminal—separate from the New Horizon program—which will eventually add 70 gates. Once complete, the combined total will bring BNA’s gate count to 140, positioning it as a major air travel hub in the southeastern U.S.
